Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, ICCROM Regional Office for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage in the Arab Region (ICCROM-Sharjah), in cooperation with the National Commissions for UNESCO in the Arab Region, is launching a regional competition on the “notion and importance of cultural heritage” for school students entitled:
“Our heritage brings us together”
TThis competition aims to raise awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage in the Arab region. Cultural heritage can be understood as a resource inherited from the past in all its forms and facets, whether tangible such as buildings, monuments, books, archaeological sites, etc., or intangible such as practices, languages, oral traditions, digital art, animation, video, etc.
Heritage ensures the continuity of a nation`s identity and balances the past, present and future. Hence, it is important to preserve heritage as a community responsibility and a priority for its role in building a generation connected to its roots and ethics.
ICCROM-Sharjah was founded by ICCROM (International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property), and the Government of the Emirate of Sharjah. ICCROM’s 27th General Assembly, convened in Rome in November 2011, decided to establish a regional office of ICCROM in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.
ICCROM- Sharjah is a continuation of ICCROM’s ATHAR programme, which has dedicated its activities since it was launched in 2004, to the protection of cultural heritage in the Arab region and to broadening access, appreciation and understanding of its rich history.
Basing its philosophy, goals and activities on its wide knowledge and experience in the field of cultural heritage in the Arab region, ICCROM-Sharjah today is working to enhance the capacity of official heritage institutions to manage heritage sites, historic monuments and museum collections on a sustainable basis..
These objectives are foreseen to be achieved through a series of regional educational and field activities including:
National commissions of UNESCO, ALESCO and ISESCO are set up by their respective governments. They operate, on a permanent basis, for the purpose of associating their governmental and non-governmental bodies in education, sciences, culture and communication with the work of the Organizations. National commissions also act as agencies of consultation, liaison and information, and mobilizing and coordinating partnerships with national partners, including the civil society.
